Ivorians call for stronger climate action as environmental concerns escalate

Kasi Insight's Sustainability Tracker reveals evolving consumer perspectives on environmental challenges across Africa, capturing the priorities and expectations of individuals as they navigate sustainability issues. Conducted annually in major African markets, the tracker delivers a comprehensive analysis of the environmental concerns consumers feel most urgently, their demands from businesses, and the actions they view as essential for fostering sustainable growth.

In Ivory Coast, the survey identifies several pressing environmental priorities. Leading these concerns is global warming, with 34% of respondents naming it as the most critical environmental challenge. This issue resonates particularly with Gen Z, as 44% express strong awareness of climate change's impact. Habitat destruction and deforestation are also prominent, cited by 32% of respondents. Millennials and Gen Z are especially concerned about the loss of natural habitats (36% and 33%, respectively). Rapid urban development in Ivory Coast has contributed to deforestation and ecosystem loss, posing threats to biodiversity and disrupting ecological balance.

Waste generation and plastic pollution are major concerns for 30% of the public, with heightened worry among women (34%). This waste not only harms the environment but also endangers public health. Extreme weather events, cited by 29% of respondents, are increasingly frequent and severe, with Gen Z (38%) especially aware of impacts like floods, droughts, and heatwaves. Additional concerns include biodiversity loss (26%), water scarcity (24%), rising sea levels (24%), glacier melt (24%), and pollution (23%), underlining the urgent need for environmental strategies that tackle pollution, safeguard ecosystems, and protect resources for future generations.

Businesses face public demand to lead in sustainability efforts

Ivorians expect businesses to take proactive steps in addressing environmental issues. A substantial 65% of respondents believe companies should offer sustainable products and services, with support particularly high among Gen Z and Millennials (66%). Additionally, 57% want businesses to reduce their carbon footprint, a view strongly held by low-income respondents (69%).

Over half (54%) of the public expects businesses to advocate for climate-friendly policies, with high-income respondents (76%) showing the strongest support. Furthermore, 53% believe companies should invest in clean technologies, such as renewable energy and waste management solutions, to lessen their environmental impact.

Key sectors seen as lagging in environmental responsibility

Public perceptions of sector efforts toward environmental sustainability vary, with most viewing the government as performing a "just fair" job (46%), indicating a need for stronger leadership. Fast food chains (45%) and food and beverage manufacturers (37%) are seen as major waste contributors. The performance of industrial manufacturers and mining/oil companies is similarly criticized, with 39% and 38% rating them as "just fair," highlighting their environmental impact.

Financial institutions (40%) and telecom companies (39%) are also expected to increase their sustainability efforts. Banks could finance green projects, while telecoms can reduce e-waste and embrace energy efficiency. Additionally, the transportation sector (38%) is noted for its pollution, with an urgent call for sustainable transit solutions.

Collaborative solutions are essential for a sustainable urban future

To advance a sustainable future, urban planners, businesses, and government agencies in Ivory Coast must focus on initiatives that address the nation’s critical environmental challenges. Climate change concerns, especially among Millennials, Gen Z, and Gen X, underscore the need for urgent actions such as lowering emissions, improving waste management, and protecting forests. With 34% of respondents identifying these issues as priorities, strategies like expanding green spaces, enhancing waste systems, and sustainable urban planning are essential.

The public also expects businesses to be central to these efforts. Across income levels, respondents emphasized that companies should offer sustainable products and cut carbon footprints. Implementing energy-efficient solutions, investing in renewable energy, and creating eco-friendly products can not only boost environmental outcomes but also reinforce trust in businesses as responsible entities.

Key industries such as sanitation, agriculture, and transportation are also called to improve their sustainability efforts. Many respondents (41%) rated sectors like sanitation and water management as "just fair," highlighting an opportunity for these sectors to reduce pollution, conserve resources, and enhance urban living conditions. Ultimately, a collaborative approach between public and private sectors, focused on sustainable urban growth, is vital for building resilient cities that can thrive in the face of escalating environmental challenges.
