Kasi Insight’s Financial Freedom dataset provides an in-depth understanding of the concept of financial freedom in Africa. It offers valuable insights that can drive product innovation for banks and other financial institutions. The data allows for a granular analysis by age group, gender enabling a nuanced understanding of different demographic groups’ financial goals and strategies. The dataset, an annual tracker , covers over 20 markets across Africa, offering a broad perspective on financial aspirations and strategies continent-wide.

According to Kasi data, most Namibians are striving for financial freedom. A recent April 2024 poll of 503 respondents revealed that 94% are actively working towards this goal. For Namibians, financial freedom primarily means achieving financial goals like buying a home or starting a business, with 79% of respondents emphasizing this aspect. Additionally, 67% believe that managing day-to-day expenses like paying bills, rent, food is crucial for financial freedom.

The data reveals that financial freedom does not mean the same thing for consumers in Namibia. Among Gen X, 84% see it as meeting financial goals, but they are less concerned about handling unexpected costs (30%). In contrast, Gen Z and high-income respondents have varied views, balancing between meeting financial needs and managing daily expenses.

Gen Xers financial strategies emphasize a debt-free lifestyle and seamless saving habits

When examining the practical steps Namibians are taking to attain financial freedom, the data highlights some key priorities across various demographic segments. The top priority for most respondents is "Having some disposable income available at the end of the month," which ranks first, emphasizing the universal importance of financial surplus. This is followed closely by "Owning my own house / paying off my mortgage," which stands as the second highest priority, reflecting the strong desire for property ownership among Namibians.

Interestingly, the importance of "Paying off all bills in full each month" varies, ranking third overall but showing significant variation among different groups. For instance, it is more critical for Gen X, where it ranks second, compared to Gen Z, for whom it is less of a priority. "Paying for things without having to check my bank balance first" is another significant step towards financial freedom, especially for Millennials and Gen Z, highlighting their need for financial fluidity and less day-to-day financial stress. This contrasts with Gen X, where it ranks sixth, indicating a lesser immediate concern compared to other financial goals. "Being able to save some money each month" ranks fifth overall, with notable emphasis among Gen X, where it tops the list, showing their preference for building a financial cushion. However, it ranks significantly lower for Gen Z, who prioritize immediate disposable income and covering bills over savings.

Being a true-life partner is a big opportunity for financial institutions

As Namibians’ financial priorities shift over time, financial institutions have a significant opportunity to meet these evolving needs. It’s crucial for banks to develop products and services that foster prosperity and hope, especially in the current economic climate. Tailored financial solutions can encourage even those not currently seeking financial freedom to start their journey.

These insights highlight the need for financial institutions to tailor their financial products and services. By understanding the unique financial priorities of each demographic, banks can better support Namibians in their quest for financial freedom. A one-size-fits-all approach is unlikely to be effective.

Understanding these differences is vital for financial institutions aiming to introduce relevant products and services. Different interpretations of financial freedom led to varying preferences for investments and savings plans. It’s time for banks to innovate and offer solutions that truly resonate with consumers.
