Kasi Insight's Retail Demand Index provides a comprehensive measure of consumer demand across various retail categories in Africa, ranging from +100 to -100. A higher value signals strong purchasing intent, while a lower value indicates declining demand. An analysis of Tanzania’s beverage market from 2023 to 2024 reveals notable shifts, with bottled water, fruit juice, and milk maintaining dominance, while tea and coffee show volatility. However, the most significant trend is the rapid surge in demand for regular soft drinks and energy drinks, reflecting evolving consumer preferences.

Bottled water experienced steady growth, rising from 58 in March 2023 to 79 by December 2024, while fruit juice peaked at 81 in November 2023 before stabilizing at 71. Milk maintained consistent demand, reaching 82 in mid-2024 before slightly declining to 72. In contrast, tea and coffee saw fluctuations, with tea peaking at 74 in July 2024 before experiencing a sharp drop. The most remarkable growth, however, was in regular soft drinks and energy drinks. Regular soft drinks surged from a demand index of 15 in March 2023 to 73 by December 2024, while energy drinks followed a similar trajectory, jumping from 10 to 68 over the same period.

Millennials and women drive demand for regular soft drinks and energy drinks

The 2024 demographic breakdown reveals that millennials and women are the primary drivers of the growing demand for regular soft drinks and energy drinks. This shift highlights evolving consumer preferences, with these groups showing a particularly strong affinity for these beverage categories.

Women reported a demand index of 65 for regular soft drinks, slightly ahead of men at 60. For energy drinks, the gap was narrower, with women at 54 and men at 52. Millennials emerged as the most dominant demographic, recording the highest demand for both soft drinks (67) and energy drinks (58). In contrast, Gen Z and Gen X displayed relatively lower interest, with Gen Z reporting a demand index of 61 for soft drinks and 49 for energy drinks.

Brands must adapt to evolving consumer preferences to drive growth

Tanzania’s beverage market presents a prime opportunity for brands to innovate and expand their market share. While bottled water, fruit juice, and milk continue to enjoy strong demand, the rapid rise of soft drinks and energy drinks—particularly among millennials and women—signals a shift in consumer behavior that brands cannot afford to ignore. To stay competitive, companies must enhance their product offerings through innovation in flavors, eco-friendly packaging, and health-conscious marketing.

The surging demand for soft drinks and energy drinks provides a lucrative opportunity for targeted marketing campaigns. Brands can position energy drinks as essential for busy professionals and active lifestyles, emphasizing energy-boosting benefits, while soft drink brands can highlight refreshing flavors and their role in social occasions. Affordability, convenience, and lifestyle appeal will be key in capturing the attention of these fast-growing consumer segments. By aligning their strategies with these shifting preferences, brands can strengthen their presence in Tanzania’s evolving beverage market.
